Based on an earlier movement for violin and cello duo and lasting a little under 2 minutes, Mechanical, for alto flute, cor anglais and bass clarinet, is characterised by a motoric, repeating note figure (which provides ample challenges in articulation for the players), around which dance barely-glimpsed motivic fragments, before the music comes to a sudden, arbitrary halt.

Mechanical was written for rarescale and premiered on 13 December 2008 at Shoreditch Church, London.
